Google’s Gemini AI assistant currently operates without ads, but the company has “very good ideas” on how that might change, according to CEO Sundar Pichai. Speaking during an investor call this week, Pichai hinted at potential monetization strategies for Gemini, including a possible ad component.
At present, users can access Gemini for free or through a paid subscription that offers additional features. However, advertising could become part of the product in the future. When a Wells Fargo analyst inquired about “future monetization opportunities for Gemini” and whether Google envisions an “ad component,” Pichai responded that the company is currently focused on free access and subscriptions. However, he emphasized that Google is always looking to improve the user experience and has promising ideas for native advertising.
Google’s Long-Term Monetization Plans
Pichai also highlighted Google’s broader commitment to reaching billions of users with its products, noting that advertising has historically played a significant role in that strategy. Citing YouTube as an example, he suggested that, over time, Google will likely offer users different choices regarding monetization. However, for now, the focus remains on subscriptions, reminds NIXSOLUTIONS. He also mentioned that Google is investing $75 billion in AI development this year, reinforcing the company’s long-term commitment to advancing its AI offerings.
While it seems unlikely that ads will appear in Gemini this year, advertising is a core part of Google’s business model. Given the recent introduction of AI-generated summaries in Search, it’s reasonable to expect that some form of advertising will eventually be integrated into Gemini as well.
