Meta has unveiled its latest AI innovation, the text-based Llama 3.3 70B. This new model delivers performance comparable to the previous flagship, Llama 3.1 405B, but with significantly enhanced efficiency. As indicated by its name, the model contains 70 billion parameters compared to the earlier version’s 405 billion. Furthermore, Meta revealed that its AI assistant has garnered an audience twice as large as ChatGPT’s.
Advancements in Efficiency and Performance
According to Ahmad Al-Dahle, Meta’s vice president of generative AI, the model benefits from the latest advances in post-training techniques. “This model has improved core performance at a significantly lower cost,” Al-Dahle stated on X, formerly known as Twitter. He shared data showing that Llama 3.3 70B outperformed competitors like Google Gemini 1.5 Pro, OpenAI GPT-4o, and Amazon Nova Pro in benchmarks such as MMLU, which evaluates language comprehension.
The model is open source and available for download on platforms like Hugging Face and the official Llama website. However, Meta has imposed restrictions on developers using Llama models in projects with over 700 million users, which require a special license. Despite these limitations, the Llama series has been downloaded over 650 million times. Meta itself uses the model as the foundation for its AI assistant, which boasts nearly 600 million monthly active users—double the reach of ChatGPT, according to CEO Mark Zuckerberg.
Plans for Llama 4 and Infrastructure Investments
Meta’s ambitions don’t stop with Llama 3.3. Zuckerberg previously indicated that training the forthcoming Llama 4 would demand ten times the computing power of Llama 3, adds NIXsolutions. To meet this need, Meta has acquired over 100,000 Nvidia accelerators, mirroring efforts by other industry leaders like Elon Musk’s xAI.
Additionally, Meta’s capital expenditures surged by 33% in Q2 2024, reaching $8.5 billion. These funds have been directed toward expanding servers, data centers, and network infrastructure. These investments underline Meta’s commitment to maintaining its competitive edge in AI.
