OpenAI’s latest image generator, powered by the GPT-4o model, is now accessible to all users. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced this update on his social network X page. Previously, only ChatGPT’s paid subscribers could use this AI tool.
Free users currently have a limit of two images per day. Altman had earlier mentioned the possibility of raising this limit to three. Following its public launch, the generator saw an immediate surge in popularity. The demand was so overwhelming that, according to Altman, the company’s graphics accelerators nearly “melted” due to the high workload.
Copyright Concerns and OpenAI’s Response
One of the most popular uses of the generator has been creating images in the style of Studio Ghibli. However, this sparked concerns about potential copyright violations, as the AI-generated images closely resembled the animation studio’s work. Additionally, some users exploited the tool to generate fake receipts, such as restaurant bills. In response, OpenAI assured that all AI-generated images contain metadata that identifies their origin.
OpenAI’s Market Growth
Alongside this announcement, OpenAI revealed that it had secured $40 billion in funding, bringing its market valuation to $300 billion, adds NIXSOLUTIONS. SoftBank led this investment round. The company also disclosed that ChatGPT now has over 500 million weekly users, with monthly active users reaching 700 million.
