OpenAI is preparing to release several new AI models in the near future, including an updated version of GPT-4 known as GPT-4.1. This new model is expected to be an improved version of the flagship reasoning model GPT-4o. According to The Verge, GPT-4.1 will also support real-time processing of text, images, and audio, just like GPT-4o.
Alongside GPT-4.1, OpenAI is working on lighter versions of the model, referred to as GPT-4.1 mini and GPT-4.1 nano. These streamlined models could launch as early as next week, expanding the range of options available for different use cases and performance needs.
In addition, the company is preparing to introduce a full version of the o3 model, along with a lightweight variant of the o4 mini. These developments indicate that OpenAI is continuing its focus on expanding both its high-performance and lightweight offerings to meet growing demand across diverse user groups.
Hints of Imminent Releases and Performance Concerns
AI developer Tibor Blaho, known for identifying new features before they become public, discovered references to these upcoming models in the new web version of ChatGPT. In his view, this points to an imminent launch. While OpenAI has not yet confirmed specific release dates, these indicators suggest that the models are nearly ready for rollout.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman had previously hinted on the social network X about “exciting features” that would soon be added to the company’s product line. However, he did not clarify whether these features are directly connected to new models. Altman also cautioned that users might experience delays, crashes, or slower service due to the strain on computing resources: “You should expect delays, crashes, and slow services while we resolve performance issues.”
NIXSolutions notes that OpenAI had earlier limited access to the image generation feature in the free version of ChatGPT due to server overload. According to Altman, the feature’s popularity nearly pushed their GPUs to the brink, suggesting significant demand for OpenAI’s capabilities.
As these updates roll out, we’ll keep you updated on availability, performance changes, and any new features introduced with these upcoming models.
