NIXSolutions: OpenAI to Release an Open AI Model

In the coming months, OpenAI plans to introduce an open large language model—the first since GPT-2. This announcement appears on a dedicated page on the company’s website, where developers, researchers, and the community are encouraged to participate by filling out a provided form.

“We are excited to collaborate with developers, researchers, and the community to gather feedback and make this model as useful as possible. If you are interested in providing feedback to the OpenAI team, please let us know [via the form] below,” states the OpenAI website. Additionally, OpenAI will showcase model prototypes at its own hosted events. The first event will take place in San Francisco in a few weeks, followed by meetings in Europe and the Asia-Pacific region.

Competition and OpenAI’s Strategy

OpenAI faces growing competition from companies like the Chinese DeepSeek, which release open AI models, enabling both experimentation and commercial use. Meta, for example, has heavily invested in its Llama model family, surpassing 1 billion downloads in March, reminds NIXSolutions. DeepSeek has also quickly built a substantial user base.

“[Personally, I think] we need to develop a different strategy for open source. Not everyone at OpenAI shares this point of view, and it is not our priority right now. [In the future] we will release better models, but our leadership will be smaller than in previous years,” OpenAI CEO Sam Altman previously stated.

Features and Release Considerations

The upcoming open model will include reasoning capabilities, Altman noted on the X social network. OpenAI will apply the same rigorous safety checks as for its commercial models, with additional measures to address the fact that users will refine the model post-release. Large corporations and government institutions are expected to deploy it.
