While music perception networks overlap with those for speech, certain regions activate specifically during musical experiences. These areas encode various musical elements, such as timbre, pitch, melody, and rhythm. The process engages subcortical and cortical regions, including the primary and secondary auditory cortex, sensorimotor zones, and the inferior frontal gyri.
Unveiling Musical Perception Pathways
To unravel the brain’s response to music, Ludovic Bellier and collaborators from the University of California monitored brain activity in 29 epilepsy patients, who had electrodes implanted for seizure management. The participants listened to Pink Floyd’s “Another Brick in the Wall, Part 1,” while neural activity was recorded. Using advanced decoding models, the researchers reconstructed the song fragment from diverse electrode recordings.
Regional Significance and Neural Activity Insights
The recorded neural activity spanned 2668 electrodes positioned directly on the brain’s surface. The right hemisphere displayed heightened responsiveness, with 16.4% (148) significant electrodes out of 900 showing activity, compared to 13.5% (199) in the left hemisphere. Notably, 87% of significant electrodes clustered in three main areas: 68% in the superior temporal gyri, 14.4% in the sensorimotor cortex, and 4.6% in the inferior frontal gyri. The remaining electrodes were distributed across other frontal and temporal regions.
Decoding Accuracy and Unique Features
Of the 347 significant electrodes, 12.4% (43) contributed to 80% of decoding accuracy. Non-linear decoding outperformed linear methods (0.429 vs. 0.325), improving song recognition and clarity of individual elements. Melodic Specificity and Multifaceted Responses
Distinct responses emerged when specific elements were introduced. Lead guitar and synthesizer components triggered activity in posterior sections of the superior temporal gyri. Sequential activation occurred in posterior and anterior superior temporal gyri and the sensorimotor cortex. Neurons in these areas responded more robustly to vocal-infused song fragments, while rhythm perception was linked to the middle superior temporal gyri.
Integral Role of Both Hemispheres
Linear decoding models helped pinpoint critical brain areas encoding music. Removing all right or left electrodes notably decreased prediction accuracy, emphasizing both hemispheres’ importance in processing and encoding music. Notably, removing right electrodes impacted accuracy more than left ones, revealing partial redundancy in encoding. Removal of superior temporal gyrus electrodes affected accuracy significantly, while sensorimotor cortex or lower frontal gyri electrode removal had no discernible impact.
Challenges in Decoding Complexity
