OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, has announced the launch of a preview version of its dedicated ChatGPT desktop app for Windows. This new app offers an early glimpse into the features that will be part of the complete release scheduled for later this year.
Availability and Features
The app is currently accessible only to ChatGPT Plus, Team, Enterprise, and Edu users. OpenAI describes it as an initial version that provides access to the latest model enhancements, including the OpenAI o1-preview, which is its newest and most advanced model to date.
“With the official ChatGPT desktop app, you can chat about files and photos,” OpenAI states. This app brings new functionalities, although not all features available across other ChatGPT platforms are present.
Limitations and Compatibility
The ChatGPT desktop app supports most Windows 10 devices, but it has some limitations. It currently does not support voice interactions, including OpenAI’s advanced voice mode, and certain integrations from the GPT Store are not yet available.
Similar to the macOS version, ChatGPT for Windows includes a companion window feature, notes NIXSOLUTIONS. This allows users to minimize the app into a smaller view, keeping it open alongside other tasks. Users can upload files and photos, summarize documents, and even generate images using the DALL-E 3 image generator.
